In what was the first of two friendlies against reigning European Champions Spain on Tuesday, the Under-19 Women’s National Team secured a 2-2 draw. These fixtures are part of the ongoing training camp for Enrico Sbardella’s squad, with the second friendly set to be played on Friday morning, also coinciding with the conclusion of the camp. The Azzurrine are currently working towards the first phase of qualifying for the European Championship, which is set to be played in October in Moldova.
The scoreline fell dramatically in the Italians favour during the early stages of the first half, as they strode out into an effortless 2-0 lead. Bonfantini in just the fifth minute, converting after some great play from Glionna. The host’s second arrived just 13 minutes later, as Elisa Polli turned well and smashed the ball past the opposition shot-stopper.
However, it did not take long for the Spaniards to respond, as they got back to level pegging thanks to goals from Piqueras and Moral respectively. The rhythm of the match then remained high for the remainder of the game and the Azzurrine did well to keep the away side from snatching a winner. Thursday will see the second clash between the two teams, once again being played at Coverciano.
