Daniele Zoratto's Italy U16s have won the the round-robin tournament that ran from Tuesday until yesterday at the National Coaching Centre in Coverciano. The selection tournament involved 60 players born in 2002 and saw the Azzurrini beat Patrizia Panico's 'A' squad 5-2 in the final match of the in-house triangular tournament. The first match had seen the 'A' team beat the 'B' team 4-1 before the first team overcame the B squad 3-1 on penalties after the 70-minute match had ended 1-1.
The final match concluded a week in which 120 boys from the U16 and U18 age categories took to the pitch at the National Centre. It constituted an important chance to impress for the best young talent from around Italy as selected by Mauro Sandreani and his team of scouts. Mauro Viscidi, the head of the Italy youth system, was very satisfied and clearly considers these tournaments vital as they offer an overall picture of youth football nationwide. He said, “With these two triangular tournament we've reached our number one objective which is to add extra elements to the national team in order to strengthen it. Furthermore, thanks to this annual event, it's possible to meet with clubs and start a discussion on innovations and requirements for improving this relationship, which is fundamental to the growth of youth football.”
The final Azzurrini selection event will be held for Antonio Rocca's Italy U15 side and will take place at Coverciano from 23rd to 25th January.
