Italy picked up the three points and while he was satisfied with the result, Gian Piero Ventura didn’t forget the opening 45 minutes. “The first half was a lesson which will help us for the next match which is the one against Spain in Madrid,” he said. “When you want to do things in a hurry without thinking you lose your way.” It was a piece of criticism for the side who scored five and created many chances. “In the second half, we did things as we had to. The chances and goals came in a flurry. This is what I meant when I spoke about patience, we’ll remember this in Madrid. Football is a game. The problems weren’t the chances as we created seven or eight clear ones in the second half. I think that the first half was useful in showing us what could be done and we played better after the break.”

Udine again brought good fortune to Italy and Federico Bernardeschi scored his first goal for the Azzurri. “I made my debut here (against Spain) and an Italy debut is something special which you keep with you for life,” he said. “Now, I’m going to the Under-21 European Championship in the knowledge that we can compete for it against anybody. We know that we’re strong and that we have a competitive squad and a great group of guys which is key for this type of tournament. We have to find the pride at representing your country from inside of us. Sure, I really want to be part of the senior side and you can never not be motivated, the more motivated you are, the more confident you are and you can do positive things.”

Lorenzo Insigne delivered a convincing performance and he is enjoying his good form: “We knew that it wouldn’t be easy, such World Cup qualifiers simply don’t exist. We gave our all and we clinched a fundamental victory. We also know it will be even more difficult against Spain, considering that we’re playing in Madrid. We will try to show the same determination and group spirit, our goal is to play a great game and come home with a positive result. We all want to take this national team where it belongs.”
