The Under-19 National Team won their final match against hosts Sweden (3-2) on Tuesday, finishing top of their group in the first phase of qualifying for the European Championship. It was a victory largely inspired by some Milanese talent, with Andrea Pinamonti scoring in the 19th minute and Matteo Gabbia also grabbing a second-half brace (46th and 59th minute). Despite a chance from Marklund in the 90th minute, the Azzurrini were always confident of getting the result with Nicolato’s side standing strong in the five minutes of added time.
The Azzurrini coach had this to say after the match: “It was a great first half and the squad enjoyed good build-up play,” said Nicolato. “They did well to finish the first half with a two-goal lead. Following the interval, the substitutes who came on also did well, as I had a redistribute our strengths across the pitch. It was a victory earned by quality, hard work and a lot of focus.”
It was an impressive group performance from the Azzurrini, who won all three of their matches and finished in first place. This will prove beneficial to their ranking, with December 6th set to decide the groups for the second phase of qualifying for the European Championship.
