Italy lost 3-1 in the first of two friendly games in Tehran. Iran beat the Azzurre in an open game with plenty of chances on both sides. Two goals down courtesy of Xhaxho and Exana own goals, Italy hit the woodwork twice through Xhaxho and Coppari, before conceding a third and adding a consolation goal with D’Incecco.
Head coach Roberto Menichelli was partly satisfied with his team’s performance: “We are all close to our goalkeeping coach Alessandro Arpinelli, who flew back to Italy yesterday for bereavement in the family,” he said. “As far as the game is concerned, we performed well against a strong team who has some 17 years of experience more than us, I congratulate them. We played an open game and we put them under pressure too. We conceded two own goals and hit the woodwork twice: The game could have gone differently with a bit more luck. We need these kind of games to develop as a team, we have only played ten matches in our history so far. We will try to make their life hard tomorrow too.”
Italy will train tomorrow morning ahead of the second game at the Paiambare Azam.
