Azzurri lose after going ahead and are knocked out

The Italy Futsal National Team’s adventure at the European Championship only lasted for 80 minutes following a 2-1 defeat to Slovenia which has eliminated them from the tournament. Italy led 1-0 at the break through a Honorio goal but two goals from Osredkar in the last ten minutes saw Slovenia top the group and qualify alongside Serbia.

Italy return home with a number of regrets. “We accept the result,” said the Coach Roberto Menichelli. “We have to congratulate Slovenia. We gave our all and we’re sorry for our fans, the National Team knows how to get up again. Since we last became champions of Europe, we’ve not been able to win matches unfortunately. We started well tonight and had chances to make it 2-0 and the atmosphere made our lives a bit more complicated and we lost some certainties and then conceded while we were looking for the goal to make it 2-1.”

Stefano Mammarella was also disappointed after he had hoped to celebrate his 110th Italy appearance in a different way. “We’re almost used to it, it’s the third time that we’ve made a false step (elimination at the quarter-finals of the 2016 World Cup and quarter-finals of the 2016 European Championship). I don’t want it to be said that we lacked heart but unfortunately we weren’t clinical enough and we didn’t make it to the quarter-finals. Now, we need to say it was our fault because going out of the European Championship at the group stage isn’t worthy of Italy.”
