Brace from Edera helps Azzurrini seal 8 Nations draw against Germany

Two goals from Simone Edera helped the Under-20 National Team secure a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Germany in Chemnitz. Playing their fourth match of the 8 Nations Tournament, the Azzurrini put in a much improved performance following two previous defeats to both England and Portugal. Torino’s Edera opener the scoring in just the fourth minute of the match, as he fired his team out in front with a superb finish. The Germans quickly regained their footing however, equalising initially through Friede in the 22nd minute, before then taking the lead six minutes just before half time thanks to Hack. The scores were then level once again 18 minutes into the second half, with Edera once again stepping up to dispatch an impressive counter-attack from the Italians.

“It was a great response by the lads and they shown the right mentality,” said coach Federico Guidi. “We played as a team. Following the game against Portugal we lost some of the conviction that we have since regained today. It was a difficult match against tough opposition, but the lads demonstrated great defensive solidity out there today. I saw a compact team and I think that there is still a lot of room for improvement.” As for Simone Edera’s performance, Guidi had this to say: “He was good because he worked selflessly for the team,” he added. “Especially in defence. The squad provided him with some great chances and he did well to finish them off.”

On his first trip away with the National Youth Team as head of delegation, Evaristo Beccalossi had this to say: “The lads were really strong,” he said. “They were really dangerous when pushing forwards. On a personal level, I was very emotional during the national anthem.”

The Azzurrini will tomorrow return to Italy, before then taking on the Netherlands (who today beat Switzerland) next Tuesday in Lignano Sabbiadoro for what will be their fifth 8 Nations encounter.
