Three and a half million votes were cast, more than 300,000 XIs were selected by fans from all over the world in order to choose the All-time EURO 11.
These are the impressive figures of the initiative launched by UEFA for EURO 2016, which is set to begin at the Stade de France in two days. Italy are the most represented country in this ideal line-up with three players out of eleven. Current Azzurri captain Gianluigi Buffon was selected in goal; he currently holds the record number of appearances in the Italy shirt and he has enjoyed a spectacular season, which was crowned off by the achievement of setting the consecutive Serie A clean sheet record (974 minutes). The other two Italian players included in the All-time EURO 11 are Paolo Maldini and Andrea Pirlo, two players who have made the history of international football both with their clubs and the national team.
The whole XI includes legends such as Beckenbauer, Zidane and van Basten, recently retired World Cup winners Puyol and Henry, ‘Don’ Andres Iniesta, the winner of the last World Cup Lahm and recent Champions League winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
To be the most represented nation in this impressive line-up, which was chosen by fans from all over the world, definitely makes our country proud.
After rightly celebrating this impressive accomplishment by Italian football, the focus now turns entirely on Euro 2016. Forza Azzurri!
