The Italy Women’s Under-19 side has been drawn alongside the Czech Republic, Russia and Scotland for the Elite Round group stage in the next European Championship, while the Women’s Under-17 side got Hungary, Serbia and the Czech Republic.
The Under-19 National Team qualified for the Elite Round by finishing as runners-up behind France in the qualification round held in Moldova last October. They have been drawn in Group 7 and will play in the tournament in Scotland from the 2nd to the 8th of April. The Azzurrine will have to first clinch top spot to qualify for the finals, scheduled to take place from the 18th to the 30th of July in Switzerland.
“It’s an even group,” head coach Enrico Sbardella said in Nyon. “It could have been worse too. We have great respect for all of our opponents, but we know that we can give them a hard time too. The Czech Republic is the strongest of the lot, we will face them in our final group game and it will probably be a decisive one.”
Massimo Migliorini’s Under-17s go into the draw unbeaten. The Azzurrine won their qualifying group ahead of Finland and Slovenia with 5 points, courtesy of one win and two draws, during which Italy scored more goals in the head-to-head fixtures. They will play from the 23rd to the 29th of March in Hungary and will also have to win their Group if they are to qualify for the finals, scheduled from the 9th to the 21st of May in Lithuania.
“They are all solid opponents,” head coach Migliorini said. “It won’t be easy, but we will give our all in the knowledge that we cannot make any mistakes. Hungary beat Norway in the first stage, we know they are strong and they will be playing at home as well. The Czech Republic are a good side too, physically and technically, while Serbia have been playing innovative football recently.”
The draw of the 2018-2019 European Championships first qualifying stage of the 2018/2019 also took place in Nyon this morning. Italy Women’s Under-19 side will face Portugal, Romania and the hosts Bulgaria from the 1st to the 7th of October 2018, while the Women’s Under-17 side will play from the 22nd to the 28th of October 2018 against hosts Montenegro, Romania and Finland.
