It’s a point worth its weight in gold for the Women’s Under-17 National Team who drew with Spain in the opening match of the finals of the European Championship in Lithuania. In Šiauliai, Massimo Migliorini’s showed no fear against the side who have won three times and reached the final in the last edition as they earned a well-deserved draw. The result is down to Camilla Forcinella’s saves but above all the positive attitude shown by Italy who had the bravery to play on the ball and Tamborini and Fracas had chances to win it.
“I offer my compliments to the girls for the character they showed in playing against a strong team such as Spain,” said Massimo Migliorini. “The result reflects how the match went. We had chances in the first half and there probably also should have been a penalty for us. In the second half, they were dangerous on a couple of occasions but we could have won in the end.”
On a heavy pitch, Italy and Spain brought a combative match to life. Paralluelo Ayingono went just wide on 15 minutes while on the 30-minute mark the reflexes of Camilla Forcinella kept Spain out with a diving save to applause from the crowd. The best chance of the half was in the 20th minute for Sara Tamborini who hit the post with the goalkeeper beaten.
The teams started to tire a bit in the second half in the heat. Forcinella came off here line once to clear the danger and in the 68th minute the Italy goalkeeper tipped a Velasco effort just wide. Three minutes from the end, Teresa Fracasa had a chance to win it but the Ligorna forward’s powerful effort went narrowly over the bar.
