Made In Italy stats duel for week 24: Astori vs. Chiellini

Fiorentina vs. Juventus will kick off the 24th round of Serie A fixtures and it’s a fixture that needs no introduction as the latest chapter in a classic Italian clash. This week’s statistical comparison powered by Opta therefore takes a look at the two defenders Davide Astori and Giorgio Chiellini who are both veterans in the Azzurri set-up and defensive leaders for Pioli and Allegri.

In Florence, Astori has always performed at a very high level, holding down a starting spot with 22 appearances this season and 1,980 minutes spent on the pitch. The bond between Chiellini and Juventus is an unbreakable one but some physical issues have limited his playing time to 17 appearances and 1,530 minutes of action in the 2017-18 season. While neither is considered to be a playmaker at the back, the two left-footers do get involved in the play. Astori has won the ball back 159 times and 95 Chiellini 95.

In the detailed defensive stats, Astori has 43 interceptions, 16 blocks, 107 clearances and 26 duels won. For Chiellini, he has made 31 interceptions, 12 blocks, 97 clearances and won 12 duels. On the disciplinary front, Pioli’s defender has committed 20 fouls and been booked five times while Allegri’s man has given away 22 fouls and been booked once.

In attack, Astori has scored one league goal while Chiellini has one assist.
