Here’s where we publish the best player ratings earned by Italians in Serie A as awarded by the country’s bestselling newspapers (La Gazzetta dello Sport, Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport).
Gianluigi DONNARUMMA (G 8; C 7,5; T 8) Milan 0-0 Napoli
The shot-stopping starlet became the youngest-ever player to reach 100 Serie A appearances on Sunday, beating a record previously set by Gianni Rivera, and duly putting in his best performance of the season. Confident and comfortable when in possession of the ball, he also produced a number of great saves to keep out Mertens and Insigne. The most impressive of all, however, was a flying stop to prevent Milik in the dying stages, justifiably earning full post-match praise from Gattuso.
Simone VERDI (G 7; C 7; T 7,5) Bologna 2-0 Hellas Verona
Still, to this day, no one knows which is his better foot and yesterday Simone Verdi did little to help that old-age argument. The versatile Italian opened the scoring with a fierce left-footed free-kick that whistled cleanly into the top corner, while also providing a positive outlet throughout. He was always available for his teammates and is now showing consistent levels of excellence in Italy’s top tier.
Alex MERET (G 7; C 7; T 7) Fiorentina 0-0 Spal
Four fantastic saves ensured that Spal left Florence with a point on Saturday, with Meret once again reaffirming his status as a top up-and-coming goalkeeper in Serie A.
Luca CEPPITELLI (G 7; C 7; T 7) Cagliari 2-1 Udinese
The Sardians secured a crucial win on their path towards salvation on Saturday, with a brave headed goal from Ceppitelli helping secure all three points. This was the highlight of a superb display for the 28-year-old, who has consistently been a positive presence for the Rossoblu this season.
