Under-16 National Team lose out on penalties during tournament opener again

The Under-16 National Team were yesterday beaten by Portugal on penalties during their debut fixture in the UEFA tournament in Vila Real de Santo Antonio – a town of around 18,000 inhabitants and located in Faro. With the game finishing 0-0 after normal time, the match was then settled from the spot. Udinese attacker Nicolò Cudrig and Roma midfielder Tommaso Milanese both missed for the Azzurrini, with the latter also having a goal disallowed for offside in the second half.

“We put in a good performance,” said coach Daniele Zoratto. “Playing at an even level against a strong team. We stopped Portugal from playing, preventing them from pressing high and controlling play. We may have lost on penalties, but we made them struggle from a tactical perspective and we played almost the entire match at a level pegging.”

Italy will return to the field on Saturday (13:00 local time, 14:00 CET) taking on Germany, before then facing the Netherlands in their final match of the tournament on Monday 12th (11:00 local time, 12:00 CET).
