The hosts England, Switzerland and Israel will be Italy’s opponents at the finals of the Under-17 European Championship between 4th and 20th May. This is following the draw that was held today at the St George’s Park Football Centre in Burton upon Trent that was attended by Under-17s Coach Carmine Nunziata and Wayne Rooney who was an ambassador.
“It could have gone a bit better, but it could also have been worst” said Nunziata. “You just have to think that Germany, the Netherlands and Spain will all play one another in Group D. We know England and Israel well having played them last year but we know a bit less about Switzerland although we’re aware that they’re a good team. As always, the important thing is to give your best and the verdict will arrive on the pitch.”
Italy qualified as one of the seven best runners-up from the Elite Round. The first match will be on Friday 4th May against Switzerland, On Monday 7th May, England will the opposition before the final match against Israel on Thursday 10th May. The Azzurrini have a positive record against Israel with seven wins, two draws and two defeats. The Azzurrini have negative records against England (5 wins, 3 draws and 8 defeats) and Switzerland (2 wins and 4 defeats). The top two sides from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
Tomorrow morning in Kaunas at 09:00 CEST, the draw will also be held for the women’s tournament where Italy will learn who they’ll face between 9th and 21st May in Lithuania.
