Born in Carrara on 16 February 1994, Federico Bernardeschi developed in the Fiorentina youth system. The pacy left winger moved to Serie B on loan in the summer of 2013 with Crotone. He had a great season in Calabria, emerging as one of the stars of the season when his side made it to the preliminary round of the playoffs with a chance to earn promotion to Serie A. By the end of the year, he made 39 appearances, scoring twelve goals and delivering seven assists and these statistics persuaded Fiorentina to take up their right to resign him and bring him back to Tuscany.
Gigi Di Biagio gave him his Under-21 debut in March 2014 as a 20-year-old. He came on against Northern Ireland in a European Under-21 Qualifier for the 2015 competition (with the Azzurri winning 2-0). He was then selected for two training camps with Cesare Prandelli’s senior side.
He scored his first goal for the Under-21s on 9 September 2014 against Cyprus and he took part in the European Under-21 Championship in the Czech Republic.
Italy coach Antonio Conte selected him for the senior side for friendlies against Spain and Germany and the March 2016 training camp.
