Born in Castellammare di Stabia, in the province of Naples, on 25th February 1999, the goalkeeper moved up to AC Milan’s first team at the age of 16 as a reserve to Diego Lopez and Christian Abbiati. Nevertheless, the then manager Sinisa Mihajlovic decided to select him as the team’s first choice from matchday nine in Serie A and Donnarumma repaid the Serbian’s faith in him.
Donnarumma was extremely precocious also as far as his Azzurri career concerns went. After representing Italy with the Under-15s and Under-17s, he received the call-up for the Under-21 national side from coach Luigi Di Biagio ahead of the qualifiers for Euro 2017 against Serbia and Lithuania. Newly appointed Azzurri manager Ventura called him up to the senior team on 27th August 2016, making him the youngest player to be called up for the senior team in 105 years.
